It is easy to taste why Hardywood’s Gingerbread Stout has such a fan base. Inky black with a thick brown head, aromas of fresh baked gingerbread rise from the drinking vessel of choice. Dark chocolate and coffee aromas and flavors compliment the baking spices of the gingerbread. It is easy to see, smell and taste why the Hardywood Gingerbread Stout has amassed such a following.
Hardywood, Bourbon Barrel Ginger Bread Stout, Richmond, VA, 10.6%abv. This brew is opaque brown with a fluffy dark tan head that quickly recedes. The nose features the dark roasted malt up front and backed with espresso, dark chocolate and gingerbread cookie. The palate is bombarded on all sides with malt and coffee with sweet bourbon vanilla notes and that persistent gingerbread cookie. Sitting in the bourbon barrels, the gingerbread stout feels like it is pumped up with steroids, taking the ale to a higher level.
Just like the Gingerbread Stout, the Bourbon Barrel GBS disappears quickly from the shelves. Just like the Gingerbread Man says, “Run, Run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man.”
