Upper Shirley Cellars, Tannat, Charlottesville, VA, 2015 is dark ruby red with purple highlights. The nose highlights dark brooding fruit up front. Tart red cherry and minerals back up those dark fruits in the beginning. The palate explodes with tart cherry, wild strawberry, and blackberry up front. Firm tannins also go from first sip straight through the palate to the finish. The mouth feel is full and some nice acidity comes through on the finish to round out the palate.
Upper Shirley Cellars, Tannat is no wimpy wine and could easily age for another 5-8 years and its tannins should soften nicely. Right now throw a big rib eye into a hot cast iron skillet so the meats juices are sealed inside and the fat running through it melts a little extra. With some aging the fruits would work great with a roasted pork loin.
Upper Shirley Cellars half of its tannat in new French oak barrels for up to 17 months. Make sure to add some of this fantastic wine to your cellar.
Tannat is native to Southern France, but is the star of Uruguay. Naturally high in acidity and tannins, it takes skilled wine making to tame the wine and make it more drinkable. Virginian wine makers are taking tannat seriously and Upper Shirley is doing a great job with it.
