Marina Cvetic, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Reserva, 2016

Marina Cvetic, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Reserva, 2016 has an opaque inky garnet color.  The intense nose leaves you dreaming of warm summer day in the hills surrounding Abruzzo, wild red flowers, strawberries along a roadside with hints of fresh tar just paved with tart dark cherries.  The palate is filled with dark fruit, blackberry, black cherry mixed with tart red berries and nice acidity and well rounded tannins.  The mouth feel is full from start to finish.  The crisp acidity leaves your palate wanting another sip.

Marina Cvetic, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Reserva, 2016 is produced by Masciarelli in vineyards surrounding Abruzzo, which lies on the Adriatic Sea.  Aged for 24 months in barrique and a year in the bottle before being released.  Gianni Masciarelli surprised his wife crafting the excellent wine and then naming it after her, Marina Cvetic, a native of Croatia.  First produced in 1997, the Marina Cvetic, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Reserva, 2016, has been winning accolades ever since.

Montepulciano d’Abuzzo is one of my go to wines for pizza.  The Marina Cvetic, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Reserva, 2016 would be fine with pizza, but has much more depth to enjoy with other meals.  One favorite peasant dish of Abruzzo is creamy polenta covered in a rich meaty tomato sauce.
