Skippers Creek Vineyards, Pearl, Powhatan, VA, 2017 is a blend of Viognier and Chardonnay and aged two years in stainless steel vats. The Pearl has a bright yellow hue in the glass. Aromas of fresh cut wild flowers and pomelo hit the nose first. Secondary aromas of honeydew melon and Meyer lemon round out the nose. The combination of Viognier and Chardonnay give the Pearl a nice full mouth feel, Flavors of bright citrus open up the palate to juicy melons at the height of freshness. The mid palate allows the citrus to shine and add acidity that makes the mouth water for another sip on the medium finish.
The melding of Viognier and Chardonnay and aging them together has created a blend that shows off the best characteristics of each grape without one overpowering the other. Viognier, Virginia’s state grape lends color and depth of flavor; it’s natural floral notes and full-bodied texture meld well with Chardonnays deep color and citrus and tropical flavors.
Skippers Creek Vineyards, Pearl with its fuller body, fruit forward start and crisp finish make it a perfect foil for different types of food prepared on the grill. Citrus marinated chicken thighs benefit from the Pearl’s mouth feel and citrus notes. Not to be outdone, red snapper fillet topped with mandarin orange slices and sage leaves with grilled zucchini and everyone is happy.
