Winter warming brews for 2019 part 1

The Virginia Beer Co., Evil Santa, Williamsburg, VA, 7%abv. is deep opaque with a thin dark brown head. Dark malt, sweet molasses, dark chocolate and espresso dominate the nose.  Cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice are added to the mix and come on strong as the beer opens up, make sure to swirl your glass so all of the enticing aromas emerge.  The palate pretty much follows the nose.  The Evil Santa is billed as spiced milk stout.  The spices are well pronounced and this ale has a rich creaminess, full body and added sweetness with the addition of lactose.

The Virginia Beer Co., Evil Santa is the perfect end to an evening spent by the fireplace on a cold winter’s night.  Grab a slice of Mud Pie and enjoy it while sipping the Evil Santa.

Midnight Brewery, Goochland, VA, Christmas at Midnight, 7%abv. is dark reddish brown with a quickly receding tan head.  Plenty of baking spices hit the nose first, almost like the aromas wafting from the kitchen when mom starts baking her holiday pies.  There is plenty of dark malt with caramel and some vanilla sneaking through.  The palate pretty much follows the nose with some espresso coming in on the back of the palate.

The Christmas at Midnight could be paired with some spiced cookies baked for Santa Claus too enjoy before he heads back up the chimney after leaving presents under your tree. Plus how much milk can he drink; after he enjoys this ale you’ll probably get a few extra presents!

Starr Hill Brewery, Charlottesville, VA, Snow Blind Dopplebock, 7.7%abv. has a rich reddish brown hue in the glass with a quick receding tan head.  The nose is fronted by rich roasted malt backed by sweet caramel. Cinnamon, allspice and clove, and hints of vanilla finish off the pleasing aromas.  The palate is alive with the same notes as the nose.  The palate has a long rich finish which is sweet, but not too sweet and follows the Dopplebock style.

The mouth feel is full and wants to be savored on a cold evening outside next to a blazing fire pit. Have plenty of smores ingredients on hand.  The blend of Graham cracker, Hershey bar and a well-toasted marshmallow is the perfect way to enjoy the Starr Hill Snowblind.
